Producers of the celebrated Devon Chutney (onion and pineapple) and Devon Fire Chutney, we are the third generation of our family making food with dedication and passion. 

Our small team at Otter Vale make a whole range of delicious hand-made gluten-free chutneys, savoury jellies, mustards. Other delicious and traditional food accompaniments include marmalade, suet-free mincemeat, piccalilli and the renowned Coronation Sauce, and we import our authentic Mango Chutney directly from India. Many of our products have earned recognition from Great Taste and Taste of the West awards. After over 40 years as part of the community in beautiful Budleigh Salterton, we outgrew our grandfather’s original premises in 2014 and made the bittersweet decision to move. After a two year search, our new kitchen in Cullompton was designed and built by us with input from local authorities and experts, using local tradesmen, and has allowed us to achieve and maintain SALSA accreditation. 

Our accomplished team is trained both externally and internally to a high standard. We take great pride in what we make and how we make it, as visitors can see from our certificates and awards wall. Our products are prepared by hand from the finest ingredients, sourced from local producers and suppliers where possible (sadly, we still can’t grow pineapples successfully on the English Riviera!), with no artificial colours or flavouring.

Making chutney might not change the world, but our family strongly believes that everything we do leaves an impact, and we are committed to making that impact as positive as possible in our products, our service and on our environment.  Our environmental policy includes commitments to recycling food waste locally, using zero to landfill local waste contractors, reducing our use of plastic in the cooking and packaging side as well as in our staff rooms and homes, investigating plastic alternatives, optimising delivery routes and working flexibly to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, and promoting local to reduce food miles.

We supply both catering tubs and retail jars, which with their attractive branding create an eye-catching display on any shelf. Wedding favours and gift packs, including our popular cheese selection tasting pack are also available. The small batch, hand-made nature of our cooking methods mean that we can be flexible to our customer’s requirements, so talk to us! We deliver direct locally to many independent farm shops, garden centres, delis and butchers, and a selection of our chutneys may be found in the Regional Foods section of selected Waitrose stores in the south west.
