16th century thatched farmhouse in the depths of the East Devon countryside…
The Five Bells Inn is a 16th century thatched farmhouse in the depths of the East Devon countryside which boasts locally sourced food and drink. Owned and run by experienced publican, James Garnham and his fiancé, Charlotte Bradley, we are situated just 11 miles outside Exeter with plenty of car park space and 5 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens with unrivalled views of the countryside.
Our chef cooks with only the finest ingredients and we use independent suppliers who are as close to us as possible; our beef comes from Clap Mill Farm, just 3 miles away, and our asparagus when in season, comes from Lower Henland Farm which is 2 miles away.
Our fantastic menus comprise of a pub classics menu which enables those of you who love proper British pub food to enjoy a traditional quality meal. Our specials menu, however, is where you will find the most beautiful and stunning dishes to try; usually each dish is on the menu for a month until the products we use are no longer in season.
You will find the same local ethos on the bar with local wine supplier Chris Piper from Ottery St Mary supplying our reasonably-priced wines, and our ales, ciders and lagers are local too: Otter Brewery, Hanlons, Exeter Brewery, Sandford Orchards and Exmoor Ales to name a few.
We welcome families, kids and dogs and of course we cater for all types of allergy sufferers; we are also vegan and vegetarian friendly. Available for intimate wedding receptions, wakes, birthday celebrations and anniversary parties with no hire cost.
Growing green together…
We are hugely excited to be part of the green movement in the South West.

“We visited the beautiful Five Bells Inn on a sunny Saturday afternoon and we loved everything about it. From the beautiful garden, through speciality menu to hospitality of the owners James and Charlie, the experience we had was exceptional. We’ve found out that all the ingredients are sourced locally and that the menu changes daily, depending on what is currently available in the local area. Between the 4 of us, we tasted asparagus, salmon, lemon sole, hake, lamb and a vegan special – all really tasty and very fresh! If you’re in the area, I highly recommend that you pay this brilliant country pub a visit!”Orestis Georgiou
“Excellent meal at The Five Bells last night. Highlights were delicious British asparagus served with white bean hummus, hazelnut and spring onion pesto followed by hay smoked loin of Dartmoor lamb with nettle gnocchi. Just sublime. A lemon posset with beautifully sharp berry compote and darling little button shaped shortbread biscuits and a chocolate torte with caramel marscapone and a praline ice cream just about finished us off! Stunning Montepulciano wine. Great service by James and his colleague. Chic decor sensitive to the old building and subtle relaxing music made for a lovely, refined evening out. We shall be recommending to guests at our holiday cottages and glamping site Halsbeer Farm and Blackdown Yurts just 20 minutes away from this fantastic pub/restaurant.”Katie Parsons
